The first game of the 2009 Instoneair tournament was between Cowdray and Jendens on Saturday afternoon. Some say this match could have been the final as both teams were carrying good form into the encounter. A war of words between the two midfield generals Kim Richardson and Ben Turner meant that whoever was to lose would be sent home with their tail between their legs. The late arrival of Jack Richardson from school meant that Francisco Lalor would have to take his place for the first two chukkas. Cowdray ran into a first half lead 5-1.5 with young guns George Pearson and Will Batchelor firing on all cylinders. Jack arrived just in time for the beginning of the second half with the Jendens team needing quick goals. However, it was not to be and despite a late wondergoal from Kim Richardson Cowdray ran out the victors 8-4.5 with a convincing display.
The match on the Sunday was between Novate/Hickstead and Longhorns. This was a very tight game with both teams neck and neck the whole way. Longhorns went two goals ahead with 5 minutes to go and tempers rose. Some strong defensive work by Longhorns and a few decisions going against them meant that the Novate/Hickstead team couldn’t quite come back and they lost 6-4.
This meant that the subsidiary final was between Jendens and Novate/Hickstead. Both teams fealt they were in with a chance of winning this tournament and this showed in what was a very fast and tough game. Ruso Sorzana had a very good game scoring four of his teams six goals. The three Richardson’s and their neighbour Ed Gall couldn’t keep up with the intensity level set by the opposition and crucially missed an opportunity to bring the game to 6-5.5 with seconds to go to give themselves a glimmer of hope. It wasn’t to be though and Novate/Hickstead ran out the winners.

The final between Cowdray and Longhorns was played on Perretts 1 on a beautiful bank holiday Monday afternoon in front of a substantial crowd. The support was mainly for the Longhorns team, which contained Charlie Burrell, President of KCPC and Freddie Instone, the tournament’s sponsor. The visiting team however did have a number of loyal travelling fans. Cowdray, favourites after their convincing victory on the Saturday, got off to a great start with a goal from Lanto Sheridan from the first line out. Nevertheless, it was not a run away affair by any stretch of the imagination. Some strong marking and a few missed opportunities meant that there was only one goal in it going in to the last chukka. The last chukka though belonged to Cowdray scoring four goals as a result of some great team play. Special mention must go to George Pearson and Will Batchelor who are part of a large pool of young talent at Knepp Castle polo club at the moment.

The Format of the may 3 a side was to be two leagues of three, played as two round robins on saturday morning. The winners of each league would go through to the final. Second placers to the subsidiary final and so on. The first round robin was between three of our longest serving teams: Jendens, Bakers farm and Longhorns. The first two to take to the field were Bakers and Longhorns. This was a tight contest with Longhorns leading all the way until with 2 minutes to go in the final chukka Caio broke free on two occasions after some very cunning blocking form Mark Burrell and Park Bradley. Longhorns were replaced on the field by the undefeated Jendens team, allbeit with a changed line up. Bakers had their tails up after their narrow victory over Longhorns and charged into the lead early on. Even the Jendens stalwart Kim Richardson could not contain the flowing bakers attacks and they ran out winners 3-1.5. The second place decider between Longhorns and Jendens was a tense one. Jendens were 1.5 goals ahead until a fiercely struck penalty from debutant Artie Martin brought the men in red back in range. However, it was a case of too little too late.

The second round robin was not quite so action packed but nonetheless made exciting by some great polo being played by two of our younger players Will Batchelor and Peter Merriam. Polo Inc seemed to be the whipping boys and girl(our very own Emily Webb) first losing to Bad Company 5-2.5 and then put to the sword by La Calorada 7-0. Jamie Murray however remained defiant and was unfortunate not to come away with a few goals to his name. The surprise came in the final game when Bad Company seemed to fold under the La Calorada pressure and lost 2.5-0.

At 10.30 on sunday morning the natural irrigation system was turned off and Bakers and La Calorada came onto Perrets 2 to contest the final of the season's first 3 a side. Bakers searching for their first tournamentwin  in what can only be called "a while". They got off to a great start with Caio cancelling out the handicap diference within 30 seconds with a long range effort. For the majority of the next four chukkas the scores were even. But late on in the game when the La Calorada concentration faded, the Bakers tactics paid off. Parke and Mark worked hard all game blocking and making space for their play maker and in the end they came away with a deserved two goal winning margin.

Jendens got back to winning ways in the subsidiary final with Kim finding some of his previous form to edge out Bad Company 9-6 in another high scoring game.

Kim Richardson takes the heavy weigth polo pony class at the Royal Windsor Horse show on Antonia with what can only be described as a perfect performance. He just missed out in the light weight class riding Magic. The light weight class was eventually won by Nina Clarkin on a horse called Jack. Nina and Jack won the overall championship with Kim and Antonia ending up as reserve champions. To add to the prizes Nacho in his first season at Jendens farm won the prize for the best turned out.

This was Kim's first attempt at the Royal Windsor horseshow. Can this be seen as a possible career change???
