The Shotter and Byers 4 goal tournament got under way last weekend with an entry of four teams. First up to play on Friday evening were Somerton, consisting of Ned and Paddy Armstrong, Lanto Sheridan and Jorge Tassara, against Grange who were playing with their normal two goal team. Grange started with a one and a half goal advantage and Charlie Scott was quick to add one more with a blinding run down the field. After this initial good start, Grange fell asleep slightly and the higher handicapped players on the Somerton team took advantage scoring several quick goals. However Grange came back in the last chukka to within half a goal but couldn't quite get the extra goal they needed for a spot in the final on Sunday, which went to Somerton with a final score of 7 - 6.5.
The next game was on Saturday with Hoes Farm, consisting of Sophie and Peter Thompson, Freddie Horne and Caio Sorzana, taking on Longhorns who were made up of Charlie Burrell, Martin Costello, Lucas Gahan and Titico Lalor. Team handicaps were even so they started off scratch. Hoes Farm were first to score with a booming shot from 60 yards out by Sorzana. Longhorns were quick to follow with a couple of goals from some good teamwork. Sadly for Hoes Farm Peter Thompson had a bad fall and had to be replaced in the first chukka by Juan Maidana. It was a low scoring game and Hoes Farm just managed to win 4 - 3.
The final took place on Sunday in front of over a hundred guests. Somerton took on Hoes Farm in a fast paced and exciting game. Somerton were first on the scoreboard thanks to one of many fantastic individual runs made by Lanto Sheridan. This goal was swiftly followed by two more from both Lanto and Team captain Jorge Tassara. Hoes Farm finally managed to get a goal after good team play and clever passing. Somerton were awarded a number of penalties of which only three were converted. Hoes Farm slowly clawed their way back into the game but after a number of missed opportunities Somerton ran out the winners 8 - 4. The subsidiary final was a closer game. Grange again started with one and a half goals, which they built on quickly. It wasn't until the second chukka that Longhorns woke up when Titico Lalor scored two incredible fast paced goals to get them back in the game. From then on the scores stayed within half a goal and the leaders changed constantly. In the end it was Longhorns who just managed to win in the dying seconds 7 - 6.5.| < Prev | Next > |
