Last weeks tournament was sponsored by Susses Saddlery and had an entry of 6 teams. As there were only six teams and three games for each team we had to make it so that the three winning teams from the first games went through to the semi finals along with the best loser. The first game took place on the Thursday between Somerton and Longhorns in which Somerton were slow to start, giving Longhorns and instant advantage, which they kept throughout the game. The first of Friday's games was between Hoes Farm and Avcon. Avcon started with half a goal and were quick to add to this. However they couldn't hold on their lead in the second half and lost narrowly. Because of this small goal difference they still qualified for the semi finals as the best losers. The second game on Friday was between Grange and Burton Park. Grange were the superior team from the beginning and never really got into full flow and booked their place in the semi final.
The semi finals got underway on Saturday morning with Grange taking on Hoes Farm in a game in which Grange dominated again, winning 7 - 3. The second game was between Burton Park and Somerton, which was particularly close with Somerton just clinching it by half a goal. Saturday's final game was the second semi final between Longhorns and Avcon, which turned out to be incredibly close and had to go to an extra chukka in which Avcon scraped through for a place in the final.
Sunday's first game was for the wooden spoon and was played for between Hoes Farm and Burton Park. Hoes farm led for the first half but in the second Nino Maldonado turned up the heat and displayed some brilliant speed and skill which took his team into the lead and won them the game. The second game was the final in which Avcon started with a goal and a half on handicap and were quick to build on this scoring two goals in the first chukka. Grange got their act in gear in the second chukka scoring two goals putting pressure on their opposition. In the third chukka Grange scored a couple of penalties and created and extended their lead and continued to do so in the last chukka. It wasn't until late in the last that Avcon managed to make a comeback but it was too late and Grange ran out the winners 6.5 - 6. The subsidiary final took place afterwards between the two remaining teams, Somerton and Longhorns who had played each other previously in the tournament. However, even though Longhorns defeated Grange easily in their first game, they were soundly beaten in this one 5.5 - 3.| < Prev | Next > |
